About me

“Our teeth unite us.”
Generally, human beings across the world have developed varied phenotypes. Evolution has turned us into unique individuals separated by oceans. However, a trait that identifies us and that all Homo Sapiens have in common is our dental morphology.

I am a surgeon and dentist with post-graduate degrees in Orthodontics and Stomatology. I received an Honorable Mention in Orthodontics from Cayetano Heredia University in Lima -Peru and won the 2003 (ALADO) Award. I am well-versed in macrophotography, which led me to study dental morphology and the colors and textures of both biological forms and prosthetics. I’m passionate about dental ceramics and materials. Within orthodontics I’m interested in discovering the secrets of pre-adjusted appliances, the indirect positioning of vestibular and lingual appliances and the management of orthodontic biomechanics in conventional appliances and aligners. Currently, I’m very interested in implant prosthetics and I’m exploring digital prosthetic treatment and the design of new materials for milling and impressions.

My mother was a physiology professor at the Faculty of Medicine at the National University of Trujillo and she used to take me with her to the laboratories where they had microscopes and other equipment for biochemistry research. When I first looked through a microscope at the age of seven, it blew my mind. Back in my hometown, I discovered a microscope with an attachment for taking pictures. So, when I was 8, that’s what I asked for as my Christmas present, but I received a smaller microscope with no camera adaptor instead. Still, that failed connection between magnification and photography had already marked me forever. I enjoyed observing things through my microscope, but I always yearned to share what I was seeing through the medium of photography. I was finally able to do that that as a dental student using a 35mm camera. After I had finished my second postgraduate degree, I could finally realize those dreams through the use of digital cameras. I began using lenses adapted for microphotography and automatic macro rails.

From my father I inherited a passion and respect for dentistry. The laboratory was always my favorite place at his clinic. I could spend hours there playing with the materials they used back them. So, as I child I had already embarked on a special relationship with the profession. My father handed his clinic down to me, as well as his life’s example. What I most value is the fact that he had confidence in me. For some reason, he was sure that whatever I did, I would be successful at. He really admired me, admired my way of seeing the world, my character and introspective nature. I made his dreams come true. And when he passed away, I began making more of my own.

Photography always caught my attention as an educational tool. My best professor at university gave his classes by exhibiting pictures of the procedures. We felt like we were right next to him in the operating room. Then, we would discuss the procedure. It was a graduate class given to undergraduate students. That professor helped me to put together my first analog camera kit. Years later and after having received two graduate degrees, I started off on my own. In photography, I found shapes and textures that appear on teeth, but that no one had been able to explain to me. That’s what led me to study dental morphology. Later, the same thing happened to me, but with colors and optical effects. I took a many courses in dental ceramics. People from all over the world began to see my photographs and it was like a viral effect. The more people shared my pictures, the more confidence I had to keep on going deeper into what I was doing. And that’s how I started travelling. The first course I gave abroad was in Ecuador, and since then I never stopped to rest. I went wherever I was needed. I’ve always had a strong connection with the classroom. I was prepared to teach and I truly enjoy sharing my experiences. When the world was opened up to me, it was amazing to get to know so many people from so many different cultures who were interested in my techniques. I’ve shared many hours sharing experiences with people from different cultures, but underneath it all I feel we are all very similar. Every time I am in a new place, I feel like I am right where I grew up. I always see the same faces, hear the same question and the same friendly laughter. I think, overall, we all want the same things and have the same problems.

I have been travelling for over eight years now, giving workshops to groups, teaching whatever I can about the technique I have developed. I’ve created a special Signature Course with the goal of designing teaching methods, generating motivation and communication around dentistry that explores all its shapes, textures and natural colors. My course titled From Macro to Micro was born in 2013 and has been dedicated to the comprehensive mastery in the use of macro lenses and lighting for dental photography.
